HELEN VON DADELSZEN
What is the best thing about being your age?
I've never really obsessed over age, although being in my 40s I feel less concerned about ticking things off the list of life and can just enjoy where I am now. I know better what I want and who I am so that brings a sense of peace and freedom.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
I consider myself a pretty ordinary person, but I know that moving to the other side of the world, learning languages, adapting to cultures and changing careers multiple times might each be considered achievements. I've achieved a lot in my life but it feels like it's far from over and my "greatest achievement" is still to come. Watch this space!
What's your favourite thing you have checked off your bucket list?
Bungee jumping at the age of 21 with my sister. It was terrifying and exhilarating. I'm glad I did it then because I've seemed to have developed a slight fear of heights recently.
What is a trait you are most proud of?
I care A LOT about other people. I want others to feel comfortable, safe and loved. Some people might say that I put others first too much, to my own detriment, but it comes so naturally to me and is something I've learned to embrace.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I've struggled with my weight ALL my life. If I didn't have to think or worry about that, it would free up a lot of headspace and energy. I don't want to be "thin" but just not have to constantly have it in my mind - to be able to eat what I like and not worry about my size.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
That's a big question! Happiness to me is related to inner peace and being free of worries. I am at my happiest during precious moments surrounded by my loved ones, when we're sharing an experience or laughing together.
What is your most treasured possession?
I'm not one for things but I have a family signet ring which is pretty special. It's a reminder of my connection to, and the support of, my family. They mostly on the other side of the world and sometimes feel VERY far away. The ring makes me feel closer to them.
What is your greatest fear?
Looking stupid. Which is hilarious as I'm pretty good at playing the clown and being in the spotlight!
What do you most value in your friends?
That they're non-judgemental, supportive, accepting and a bit silly!
What advice would you give your younger self?
Don't worry so much about what people think about you. Go out there and embrace everything the world has to offer you!
What is your motto?
If in doubt, do without. That comes to that gut feeling or intuition when you need to make a decision. Listen to yourself and you can't really go wrong.
How important is self-love and dedicating little moments of celebrating yourself?
Very important and most women don't do it often enough. I'm trying to do it more now that my kids are a bit older. We need to fill up our vase, in order to serve others. I find myself lecturing younger women on this point - it's too easy to loose sight of ourselves along the way.
